Marlise Sparks

Musical Theatre / Singing / Drama

Marlise started singing and acting before she could read. Her older brothers and sisters would read her the words so she could learn them before she went on stage, and she has never looked back from those days.

Marlise learnt from Effie Cockburn and later Kathi Craig, sitting Royal Schools of Music, and Trinity College London exams in both singing and speech, and obtaining the highest score in New Zealand for several of these exams.

Growing up, Marlise successfully competed in singing and speech competitions, was a member of the Melrose Junior Choir, and performed in musicals with Taieri Musical Society, Opera Alive and Dunedin Operatic (now Musical Theatre Dunedin).

Moving to Melbourne with her band, Marlise toured in Australia and New Zealand, playing at some of Melbourne's top live music venues and gaining radio play on Triple J and Triple M. The band worked with Metropolis Audio (home of Ern Rose) and Tony "Jack the Bear" Mantz and Neil Wedd among others. During this time Marlise (and her band) caught the eye of international music consultant Alan Griffith and Cirque du Soleil. Marlise was also offered a contract to entertain in resorts in the UAE. In between writing, recording, touring and playing shows, she still managed to carve out some time to go back to her first love and perform on stage in musicals.

Marlise currently sings with the nine piece band Soul Deep, and can be found at the Regent Theatre doing The Highlights (Taieri Musical Society, Musical Theatre Dunedin, Doug Kamo Creative Management), and Les Miserables (Musical Theatre Dunedin).
